One of the best photojournalists I've ever known reportedly passed away after suffering a heart attack at the end of the game while covering the Chick-Fil-A Bowl in Atlanta Tuesday night. Dave Martin of The Associated Press was everywhere, sometimes in two places at once it seemed, working harder than any photographer I have ever known. He was an amazing photographer. Moments, decisive moments, seemed to form out of thin air in front of his lens. Early in my career, he inspired me immensely and I know he did the same for countless other shooters. His work ethic was super human. My prayers go out to his family and friends tonight. He died doing what he loved, cameras in hand. I don't suppose there are many ways better when your time comes. May you rest in peace, sir.
On Thursday, CNN.com posted a story that included one of Dave's photos as the lead image. It's a beauty; a sunset of all things. Sure seems appropriate that he'd get one last cover shot and leave us with a great image and a smile.
